The chain, not a single screen
Netflix describes OpenVPCal as an open-source ICVFX calibration tool. Its documented process defines target walls, exports calibration patches, captures them with a camera, analyzes the recorded plates, and produces calibration outputs. The workflow also requires checking image interpretation and patch alignment. It is a measurement process with assumptions, not a universal look applied to any LED stage.

Write down every transform
Atlas method
Before a test, ask the responsible color specialist to map the route from the authored scene through rendering, display processing, wall, camera, and monitoring. Name each transform and its owner. A plausible-looking monitor can conceal a mismatched interpretation somewhere earlier in the chain.
Keep calibration and creative look decisions distinct. A technical correction and a deliberate grade may both change the picture, but they answer different questions. If those decisions are mixed together without a record, a later operator cannot know which settings are essential to reproduce the result.
Build an acceptance record
Atlas checklist
Record the camera configuration, wall settings, calibration output, and monitoring path alongside a reference capture. Use controlled patches for measurement and a representative shot for creative review. Avoid drawing conclusions from a compressed reference image displayed on an unknown screen.
The project image above illustrates a completed ICVFX frame; it is not a measurement chart or evidence of a particular OpenVPCal result. For implementation, follow the tool’s current user guide with the team responsible for the stage.
- Document target, input interpretation, and output placement.
- Keep the technical calibration separate from the creative look.
- Retain captured references and the configuration used to make them.
Judge the recorded chain and preserve the settings that produced it.
