Sony built Crystal LED Verona for virtual-production walls

The stage

On 7 September 2023, Sony Electronics announced, in a release distributed via PR Newswire, four Crystal LED VERONA displays described as “purpose-built to meet the needs of virtual production.” The release states the panels reach 1,500 cd/m² brightness, cover more than 97% of DCI-P3, run refresh rates up to 7,680Hz, and come in P1.56mm and P2.31mm pitches across four models. Sony's Kevin O'Connor, Senior Director of Cinematic Production Solutions, is quoted calling the line “a critical piece in creating virtual productions that frictionlessly marry the real and the virtual realms.” The release also announces a Virtual Production Tool Set, including a camera-and-display plugin and a color calibrator matching wall output to a specific camera.

What the documents establish

This is Sony's own announcement, distributed through a wire service, so every figure here is a vendor statement rather than an independently measured result. A second Sony release, dated 5 June 2025, announcing Crystal LED CAPRI, corroborates the earlier framing by describing CAPRI as sharing VERONA's luminance and controller support so “the VERONA as the main wall and the CAPRI on the ceiling” can run together, and by naming a Tool Set version 3.0 adding camera-position-based color correction. Together, the releases show Sony treats Crystal LED for virtual production as an evolving family with its own naming and tools, not a single unchanged product.

The department view

For the DIT and camera department, the color-calibrator tool is the concrete workflow change: matching wall output to a camera's sensor is a software step in Sony's own tool set, not automatic from brightness or gamut figures alone. For the art and lighting departments, the anti-reflection technology named in the release addresses a documented practical problem, contrast loss “from adjacent panels and studio lighting,” a department-level concern about how a volume's own light interacts with fixtures placed near it, not only a spec-sheet number.

What to check before you build

This is an editorial checklist: confirm which Crystal LED model a quoted spec belongs to, since VERONA, CAPRI, and the earlier B-series carry different pitches and brightness under one family name. Verify the stated spring 2024 VERONA availability and any tool-set version against Sony's current materials before budgeting, since both are vendor-stated timelines subject to change.

• Which specific Crystal LED model and pixel pitch is being quoted, and does it match the wall the production plans to rent or buy?
• Has Sony's color calibrator been tested against the specific camera and lens combination the production intends to use?
• Is a brightness or gamut figure being compared against a competitor using the same measurement method, or only against Sony's own numbers?

Sony's own releases describe a deliberate, named shift from Crystal LED as a general premium display toward a virtual-production sub-line with its own calibration software, a positioning the company kept building on rather than treating VERONA as a one-time announcement.
